How many of you J92 sailers have a number-2 genoa as part of your sail inventory? My J92 "J'Ronimo" has a number-1 and number-3, however I find that with the number-1 we are over pressed above 16 knots apparent, but the no-3 does not start to work until the wind is 19 knots plus apparent. I think that there is a need for a number-2 to fill the gap, does anyone else feel the same way? Has anyone who races under IRC removed the number-1 from the boat and replaced it with a number-2 to get the boats handicap down,if so how much of a rating difference did it make?

How can I steady the mast on my European build J/92 ? I would like to fix the mast better as it is now : they used some black-rubber string wich tends to being pulverized by the movements of the mast. This makes a nasty mess around the compartment! The application of Spar-Tight seems a bit awkward to me because the mast "touches" the collar on both sides, and there seems to be no room to create a solid ring. Maybe back to wooden wedges ?

J92 Owners, I'm interested on how you feel the J92 performs in light, med, and heavy air as compared to J80's, J105's and other common boats such as J29's, Hobie 33's, Melges 24's, etc. Maybe more to the point is with a rating in the 102-105 range does the J92 peform well in a certain wind range and maybe have a disadvantage in another range? (I know, very complicated quetion with lots of variables) but I'd like to get a "sense" of any advantages/drawbacks from owners.

Good news on the building front for J/92s. J Composite in France has been in steady production throughout 1999 and is backlogged to February. Worldwide total of boats is now about 125. There are four recently sold into Holland, 5 into the UK. Because of the favorable exchange rate with France, it looks like we will be able to offer a new J/92 landed on the east coast for approx. $65k before sails and electronics. We are working on all the logistics and will make an announcement back on this page soon. The last published retail price when US built was $71K in 1997. Production slowed as used boats became available.

Lady J Violet (hull Number 104) raced the "Barcolana" last sunday 10 th october, this is maybe one of the most "crowded" regattas in the world. This year over 1800 boats ! Check this site www.barcolana.it. We finished 84 th overall, beating a lot of big racing boats. I'll post soon some pics.

I have been impressed with the J/92 since its introduction in 1992 and have recently begun to investigate a purchase (I have had a J/22 for 9 years). I was told by someone that the boat is no longer manufactured in the US and only in limited numbers in France with a price that rivals the J/105 (after import duties, etc). Is this true? Perhaps this explains why I see more 105s than 92s out on the water. Are there any plans to resume production in the US? (The J/24 comes to mind.) Is this the best forum to watch for used 92s? I don't see many listings in publications such as "Soundings". Thank you!

So I do not get the benifit to see how others have there boats arranged, set up or other little tunning tweaks that are used by you serious sailors. I would like if posible to have a peak at some other boats. So I could steel shamlesly your ideas. Any offers.

CONGRATULATIONS TO RICHARD CALABRO AND HIS CREW ON PINOCCHIO, the new J/92 North American Champions !!! The NA's at the Larchmont NOOD were a terrific event. Final results : First - Pinocchio (Richard Calabro) (6 pts.), Second - Quetzal (Margo Taylor) (7 pts), Third - Real Escape (Dan Duley) (11 pts.), and Fourth - Killer Puppy (Jeff Britton) (16 pts). All had a great time. Please plan on joining us next year.

Hi Andy ... I wondered if anyone would comment on the sheet arrangement as I think most crews use a forward turning block. We've found that the less blocks we use, the easier the gybes are since the unloaded sheet runs smoother and that helps the whole gybe go better. The downside is the macrame(?sp) effect in the cockpit but it's manageable. Certainly it allows access with a fair lead to either cabin top winch ... we use the windward one but can transfer to the leeward one for times that you might need the windward one for halyards. If you want any more details .... just email me. Cheers, Colin #8 Poohsticks

Pooh Sticks: I notice from the photo on the home page that Pooh Sticks has led their spinnaker sheet accross to the windward side rather than to the forward turing block. I have experimented with various sheet arrangements as I find the sheet fouls the cabin top if led from the forward block to the windward halyard winch (as per J105s). Any advice ? Andy Bird. ATTENTION J/92 SKIPPERS -- Fantastic last minute opportunity to race in the J/92 North Americans at the Larchmont, NY NOOD, Sept. 10-12, 1999. There is a race equipped J/92 available in Larchmont for you to sail (the owner has to be away that weekend). No charter fee, just reimburse the $100 race entry fee (the boat is already entered), sail in a reasonable manner, and be responsible in the unlikely event that you cause damage to the boat. Bring your own crew, or we can supply local crew with J/92 experience. We will also try to find free housing for you. What a deal !!! If interested, please contact Margo Taylor immediately at (o) (212) 856-9090, (h) (212) 980-3549, or e-mail: emtesq@aol.com. Thank you.

I need some help! I need to change the name of my J92, as the previous owner wanted to keep it. The problem is that the old name is applied using vinyl self-adhesive letters. They have gone hard and brittle and will not peel of. And only break up into tiny 1mm pieces when attacked! I have had suggestions of using a hot air gun to applying paint stripper to the plastic. Before I go out and buy every one of these to have a serious go, has any one found a workable solution?

Reminder that the J/92 NORTH AMERICANS will be held on Sept. 10, 11, and 12, 1999 at the Larchmont NOOD. Please try to attend, for it promises to be a terrific event . Every effort is being made to keep the costs down. For example, Larchmont Yacht Club will provide free moorings during the regatta. McMichael's Yacht Yard (the J/Boat dealer for the Larchmont area) has agreed to launch and haul the out of town J/92's and to step and unstep their masts for a total of $150 round trip (very generous on their part) and those of us who live in the area will try to find free housing for out of town crews. So, if there is any possibility of your attending, please contact me for more details. Thanks. Margo Taylor (owner of Quetzal, hull no. 67). tel: (o) (212) 856-9090, (h) (212) 980-3549.

I recently purchased hull #4 from Dennis Verbiar of Ohio...she begged me to change her name from Heart Breaker. She insisted on a name from the Wompanoag indians who once owned the island of Nantucket....one of her favorite destinations. Coatue is her new name.... she is much happier with this name and promises to sail much faster now that the burden of being named heart breaker has been lifted from her transom.

We race our J92 in Puget Sound PHRF and have been fairly successful against a mixed fleet of other J boats (J30's, J35'S and a J80). Recently we have experienced difficulties pointing in light wind and also at moderate wind speeds as compared with the rest of the fleet. We have been playing with the rig tuning and we are looking for some references. Does anybody have any shroud tension numbers we can try and how would they change with a change in wind conditions?

If you need an experienced crewperson for BIRW, please give me a call. I've been sailing for 25 years. I own a J/30 which I race in the local PHR Fleet. Last year at BI, I crewed on "Dream Catcher", a Capri 37. I did some jib trim, some fill in where needed and some sitting on the rail . The owner bought a smaller boat and did not need me this year. I weight about 175lbs and am in good health. I've got a good sailing background, and could fill in wherever needed. Hi to all from Poohsticks, Hull #8 in Nova Scotia. I thought I'd take a moment to respond to a few of the questions posted recently. First, to Talbot ... yes, the class rules were modified for the '98 NA's and I would anticipate the same changes for '99 NA's. This is to improve the chance of participation from 92's which are mostly geared up for PHRF racing rather than class. You could check with Margo Taylor as to the plans in this regard. There is a good treatise on J Boats handicaps on the J Boats web page but basically there is a -6 usually for 155% vs 100%, I believe. To Steve ... I don't use a #2 ... I find the cutoff for me with 5-7 crew for the change from #1 to #3 is about 15-16 knots. I don't think many people use a #2 .... anyone correct me? To Alan .... congratulations .... To Keith .... sorry to lose you .... To all the rest of the Class Association ... fair winds, happy sailing! Colin

I have questions about the J92 OD standard PHRF ratings. My J92 #37 Jambalaya has a shoal draft and in the GYA rates 114 with a -6 sec for a 155% Jib. In the "home page" photo of Poohsticks in the 1998 NA's they are have a Kevlar jib on the deck. Were class rules changed for this regatta? What I read in the Association rules says Dacron or Mylar attached to and operated on the roller furller. What kind of PHRF rating difference are boats getting for a 155% jib vs OD?

Shooting Star is ready to hit the water this week. Pictures soon to follow of blast reaches and grinning sailors, I can't wait. Question, when racing the J92 in PHRF you take a hit if you use a symmetrical spinnaker and pole but what if you use the A-sail and attach a whisker pole to it. Does this also result in a PHRF penalty? Anybody out there tried it yet? Seems like it would make downwind wing on wings doable and require little modification to the original design. Any and all responses will be appreciated even if its just to say Hi. Rick...........

I'm considering a used J92 for winter sailing in Charlotte Harbor, FL. Five foot keel depths are max. Can anyone give pro/cons on shoal draft option vs full 5.9ft keel? Any shoal draft boats available?

I think Margo's idea is great. We would like to invite J-92 sailors to join us in Asia for one or all of the major regattas around Singapore. The main season has just ended, so there is plenty of time to work out details for next Fall (we race all year round, but the local weekend racing is pretty tame stuff). The big regattas are the following (the all have web sites if you want more information): The Singapore Straits Regatta - a week of races in Singapore and close-by Batam, Indonesia; The Raja Muda - a week of passage races (mostly at night) and bouy races along the west coast of Malaysia; The King's Cup in Phuket, Thailand - the biggest and the best - locals say that small boats do not do well in this typically heavy-air regatta - anyone want to try to prove them wrong and give it a go on 'Pla Loma'? These are all well run and professional regattas. They are (in)famous for their party atmosphere. I did them last year on other people's boats, so I know the program. I'd like to do the circuit on my J-92 this year. The boat is in top shape and was high-point boat in Singapore in 1998 and Boat of the Year In Singapore in 1997. It's a long way off to these races, but I welcome interested J-92 owners and crew to contact me.

ATTENTION J/92 OWNERS OUTSIDE OF THE U.S.! We race a J/92, Quetzal, out of Greenwich, CT and are fairly competitive (missed winning the 1998 J/92 N.A.'s by one point). I have an idea which may eventually be of interest to many J/92 owners, if it can be implemented. I (and perhaps a couple of my crew) would love to race on a J/92 abroad in a major regatta and in exchange could offer the opportunity for you to join us on Quetzal in a major U.S. regatta (such a Block Island Race Week in June, 1999). All the details would have to be worked out if anyone has an interest. Please contact me at emtesq@aolcom. Thanks.

I am looking for a crew position for the Warsash Spring Series starting in March. I have been racing a j92 succesfully for the past two seasons as well as doing some work on J105's and a 110. I also have quite a lot of experience on X332's. I can do pretty much any job on board including navigation and I am looking for a spot on a competitive boat for the whole six races. Any offers?

I'm interested in getting feedback on rig tuning-- specifically mast position in the boat and headstay length. Also, I've seen other people ask, but no answers posted re who knows how to make proper sails for the J-92 (tuffluff setup). The Asian sailmakers I've dealt with don't know the boat well enough- and there are no sailmakers in Singapore, so recuts are tough/expensive. There must be an East-Coast loft that can help. It's time to get serious for the 1999 season!
