I currently own a J29, and I'm contemplating moving to a J92. I have read much of the material about the J92, and I am quite interested in it's ease of short handed sailing capabilities. I would very much appreciate a J92 owners opinion about the sailing characteristics of the boat.

I am very interested in joining the sprit-sport boat fun. Have been racing my Catalina 30 for many years. Undecided about a J-80 or a J-92. Any used boats in the Detroit area? What are estimates on starting out with a new boat? Any help is apprciated.

I'm the owner of the second italian J92 - JustanotherKISS, hull #86, ITA 13092. She follows J KISS, a J 44 (ITA 12044, hull #54), the best cruiser racer her size I ever sailed. Now my father is no more involved in sailing and I wanted a smaller, but fast and exciting boat. I got it and I'm happy with it. Above all, I plan to sail her, together with my brother, in off-shore doublehanded races in the Mediterranean. I will let you all know if we manage to get something out of it...

I would like to know from J92 owners who use a conventional symmetrical spinnaker: What penality are you given in your area for using both A-sail and conventional spinnaker and if using just a conventional spinnaker are you penalized? Thanks for the help!

J's 1,2 and 3 at Brighton, UK. The fourth race in BMYCs winter series saw J boats take the top three places in a mixed fleet of 18 entries sailing under CHS. "Juice of the Moose" (J92 - Andy Orton & Duncan Money) continues to dominate the series, taking first again (currently 1,1,1,1 - 7 out of 8 to count). In second place was the "Jump the Gun" (J105 - Julian Grindall) and third, "J'ronimo" (J 92- Barry Shoebridge).

I'm the owner of hull No.18, Acrobat. I'm interested to know if anyone has any comments about the main cabin teak table option, and/or if they have one to sell. I've had a great time with the boat these past four years. I like the fact that I can singlehand the boat as well as fly the a-sail with just my 11-year-old son as crew.

Just visited our French J/92 builder and five other dealers last week. The J/92 was on display at the Stockholm Show in Sweden and will be at the upcoming Paris Show. There are 5 boats in the UK, 7 in France, 3 in Holland, 4 in Malta, 1 in Italy and the first one in Sweden! I'll e-mail some photos to Topher of the Swede boat when developed. Most notable alteration for the Europe market is the addition of a small bow anchor locker!

It was a sad day on Monday (10-5-97) as TopTick was pulled and is now stored in the Lake City Marina's lot for the winter. We finished our season with our fall three race Hoyt Cup Regatta. The first day saw very light air --actually no air. We started with a 2 knot breeze that dropped to zero. I don't want to get into our frustration as we found every hole in the lake. A Ranger 23 that was within 50 feet walked right by us. The next day we we rebounded an saw 14 knots of boat speed in winds of about 25. Wheeee. While the regatta wasn't our best, we think we ended up winning "boat of the year" for our club. I mention this not only as kudos to the crew----I just drive and go were they tell me---but as recomendation to any prospective J/92 buyer. The boat is a blast. Have a nice winter and thanks to TW for his work with the class.

Re: Steve Small's question on the J/90. We're hoping this R&D boat will bring exposure to the whole sprit line and result in a boost for J/92 production. Because it's only aim is to go fast, there is no provision for an inboard engine, fixed head, or accommodations beyond two pipe berths. People drawn to the sprit "easy-speed" concept who want some degree of accommodation will be drawn to the J/92. In the world of 30 footers, it's time to set a new speed standard, and we hope by doing so, all the J sprit models will benefit. 15 years ago, when the J/30 sales stopped, we introduced the J/29. The excitement around the boat resulted in renewed interest in the J/30, and 100 more boats sold over the following 3 years.

As some of you know, I bought the J/92 Hypercom renaming the boat Feral Child. We've been sailing it on Narragansett Bay all summer...what a blast !! We find our competition is another '92 (Pinnochio) along with J/105's. I just ran across the 8/22 J/Boats announcement of the J/90. Same 30' length, longer waterline measurement, longer sprit, lighter (3700 lbs), narrower at 8 feet. Check it out on the J/Boats website. I wonder how this will affect sales of J/92's? Topher, can you publish the loos gauge/ rig data? You once e-mailed me an unreadable file. I'd like to check the numbers. Keep up the good work on the web site!! 8

Barring last minute surprises, Miller Time is sold to Mike Redmond of Palo Alto and the boat will be at Alameda in a few weeks. The price is between the two of us, but we are both happy. He has not decided about the trailer, so it is still available at the reduced (fairer) price of $5000, FOB MIlwaukee. Jeanne says NOT to sell her Subuurban, so... Come on guys make up your mind to enter the wonderful world of regattas. NA's, and distance races that are many miles from home--even Key West (no I will NOT rent it). This trailer will hold any keel boat up to 7500#s, so maybe a 105 guy might be interested, . Call me at 414-937=6390. Bill Miller. Se yoiu at the Annapolis Boat Show Thursday and Friday!

Greetings fellow J/92 Sailors --- Just got back from the Chi-Mac Race and am reporting a wonderful fast race. We finished on Monday around noon. The last six hours were sailed in the thickest fog I have ever sailed in. The sun broke through for the final ten minutes of the race where we found ourselves finishing with 20 other boats. Many thanks to Bill Miller of "Miller Time" for helping us in preparing for the race. He saved us a potential "protest" when advising us on the local PHRF rating system -- we planned to use runners until we found out they had to be declared prior to the race. We hit a true 13.8 kts. (GPS confirmed) and saw 9-10 kts for sustained periods ---- one hour stretches. We had a few terror stricken moments. We had an "all hands on deck!" when we hit a log doing 10 kts. No damage, but it made quite a noise. We also had a few chuckles after the race at the comparison of our fog horn (VW bug horn like) to the big ships'. We enjoyed the ride. We ended up 7th out of about 25. ----------- Mark Nichols --- Top Tick --- Mpls, MN

The New York Yacht Club is just finishing up the final day of running their "National Championship" regatta, sponsored by Rolex. They've run seven races over three days for 6 classes: J35, J120, J44, Mumm 36, Mumm30, NY40, each of which called this a Nationals or NA's. There were only two classes on each racing circle, so not much waiting around like most multi-class regattas. It appears they will def. do this again in 1999, perhaps even next year. This would be a great venue for a future J/92 NA's. Besides, the winner gets a Rolex!

I have installed a boomkicker and am very happy with it. Tricky parts are interference with the outhaul which I reled and having to tap and screw the mast instead of using the slides. I bought it from Josh at Layline who is a griend of the J/92 class and used to crew on Ubiquitous. Reports on wing on wing is that it's slow unless there's enough breeze to plane then it's very fast. But keep your heads down. This was done with success first on the Brut circuit by pros on J/105s. In light air, well sailed banna curves and the angles seem to work best.

Has anyone tried flying the A-sail wing on wing downwind? If so, how has this changed the performance. I would think that it would increase your straight downwind speed. I have been reading the new rules, and there doesn't appear to be any rule regarding which side of the boat the spin pole must be carried.

So Cal PH ratings now at 102/90---Buoy vs. random. However, buoy is only W/L for all practical purposes. Johnstone sugg even with the J-29 for W/L. I would think that a 108/96 would split the diff and give the boat a lower-than-sugg handicap for races other than W/L and a more equitable 108 for the increasingly popular W/L regattas. WE've raced extensively since 1994--all year here- and have a Kevlar main and jib. and a running chute to help in the s/l races. Still can't come close to a Pinnacle 29.

I've been compiling a spreadsheet of loos numbers, mast butt placement, and headstay lengths along with sail loft/manufacturer info. If you'd like to contribute this stuff will eventually find it's way onto the site for reference. Also, check out the table now posted on the site for PHRF comparisons in all areas. I believe that Steve Small's boat x Hypercom is rigged for runners but that the last owner found them of little help. I also recall Jim Stansbury saying that he sails with quite a bit of headstay sag, Jim has Quantums and did extensive analyses on sag and mast bend. I have his spreadsheet if anyone is interested.

Greetings, The PHRF for San Diego for the J/92 is split into two ratings depending on the type of race. The rating for W/L buoy racing is 108. For random leg races it's 84. I think the random rating should be closer to 102. For reference the J/29 is rated 114 for both types and Olson 30 is 99. The J/80 is 114 for W/L and 108 for random leg and the J/105 is 78 for W/L and 72 for random leg. Seems strange that the 105 and 80 have 6 sec difference while the J/92 has 24 seconds. Although I'm not on- line, I can be reached by fax at 610-273-6145.

New York, NY USA - Friday, May 09, 1997 at 07:01:48 (EDT)

It would seem that PHRF ratings are a bit of a hot topic due to the spread in the ratings. I think it would be helpful to see what others rate and hear a little bit about the boats they sail against. I sail with Margo on LI Sound and due to the Windward/Leeward nature of the courses we race, the boat seems to be at a disadvantage to many of the J29's we sail against. It was nice however to see 14 knots on the "funmeter" last weekend even while sailing a fairly deep angle. I guess 30+ knots of wind can do that. Cheers. T. Westbrook, crew Quetzal.

I would be interested in knowing the PHRF rating of J/92's in various areas of the country and whether or not you have a weight limitation for PHRF. We are currently in the process of a review of our rating from the YRA of Long Island Sound: Rating 102, weight limitation 1260 lbs. Prompt reponse would be appreciated as matter wil be heard on evening of May 8. Thank you.

Hello J/92 Sailors! Spoke with Bob Steen on J/92 SPEEDY GONZALES a the Yachting Cup in San Diego today. He beat most of the J/105s and one other well sailed J/92 this past weekend. He's looking for other 92s to support an event or two out west. Let me know if your interested. In the meantime, look forward to some more frequent activity here at the forum. Any ideas for some other good events to target as a group?

Please let me know if anyone is planning to do Block Island Race Week (June 22-28).. We are definitely going on Quetzal. J/Boats told me that they would provide some prizes if we can get a few J/92's there (even if we don't have enough boats for our own start). Hope to see you at Block!
