Welcome to the 1998 J/92 Forum Archive! |
Is the J-92 ODR rating in your PHRF area a net rating that
assumes the use of a 150%-155% genoa without additional penalty?

I am looking for a kevlar genoa 3 for my J-92. Which sails
are being used in the States and what are the prices. I will be
in Key West during the Key West race week in januari, and I am
interested to take a kevlar genoa 3 back to Holland. If there are
people willing to sell a used genoa 3, I am interested as well.
With kind regards, Henk Wybinga

Thanks Colin--- The crew of 'Pla Loma' would also like to
extend season's greetings to the J-92 fleet out there. One
difference is that 'Pla Loma' is in the water and in 90 degree
weather. If anyone in the colder climes finds themselves in
Singapore this Winter, give us a call-- we'd love to meet you and
get you out for a weekend race.

While I'm posting here, I'd just like to extend Best Wishes
for a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, etc. to all from myself,
Ian (webmasters) and the rest of the Poohsticks crew.
Unfortunately the boat is up on the hard and frozen but scheming
and dreaming for the next season is in full swing!!

Good question!! We on Pla Loma here in Singapore have been
too busy sailing to contribute to the net (poor excuse).... the
season is just getting into gear with several major regattas
coming within the next month. It all culminates with the King's
Cup in Phuket, Thailand in early December (web page is
kingscup.com). The Pla Loma team has decided to charter a
Beneteau 25 for the regatta rather than worry about the 500 nm
delivery on a J-92. It should be a fun time, as Beneteaus will
enjoy one-design racing in the regatta. Sunsail Thailand still
has one boat left in its charter fleet if anyone out there wants
to get in a little tropical sailing in December! They are on the
Web as well.

Hi Gang, It makes me sad to say that our family has decided
to sell our J92 Top Tick (#3). We love the boat, but the family,
the dog, and the kids friends, all require more space as we
weekend quite a bit. If you have interest let me know. We had our
last weekend regatta (Hoyt Cup 1st weekend in Oct '98) and we had
the boat going 14.8 kts with the main reefed. We could have
removed the reef and increased our downhill speed, but the legs
were short and the lake was cold. Better safe than sorry. Our
entire crew were in life jackets and as the breeze picked up we
decided to put the hatch board in. We even locked it! What a
ride! We campaigned the boat in the great lakes this summer and
took a second in the Chicago-Mac and a third in the Little
Traverse Bay Regatta. There was another J92 sailing in our
class---they took fourth. What fun to race on the same course
with 1d35's, Farr 40's, & SC 70's. My intention in listing
our finishes is to get the word out as to the wonderful
capabilities of the boat. The boat performs well on short courses
as well as off-shore events.

Since the previous posting has caused some confusion ...
let me clarify. Either the poster or the 'online newspaper' have
managed to dredge up an archive article from 2 years ago. The
NA's in '96 were held in Annapolis, MD and were as correctly
reported in this NOW out-of-date article. The '98 NA's were
hosted by the Ida Lewis Yacht Club in Newport RI. Cheers.

Thanks Fabrice and Keith from the crew of Juice of the
Moose. I will e-mail you separately. On a general front with
regard to optimising for CHS. We do not spend a great deal of
time playing with our handicap. Instead we concentrate on boat
handling and sail trim. We have an eight man crew although
generally only seven are available at any one time. For some
races our crew limit is seven. We have found that having the
extra crew certainly helps and is not to damaging down wind in
light airs. If you would like to discuss it further please e-mail
me.

'JUICE OF THE MOOSE' - COWES WEEK CLASS 3 CHS OVERALL
WINNER. In a highly competitive fleet 'Juice' triumphed overall
on the week with results that included two 1sts, a 3, 4 and a 5.
With the exception of one day when the wind was gusting to 30
knots (boat speed @ 16.5 knots downwind), conditions were
generally light to moderate. A combination of this and few
reaching legs were not ideal conditions for the asymetric J92
considering we were up against some hot one-offs and proven
cruiser/racers. However good starts and tight crew work were the
key factors in Juice's success. The highlight of the week was
winning Tuesday race, leading the fleet from start to finish,
with owners Andy (H) Orton and Duncan Money collecting the
winning Trophy from the Royal Yacht Squadron. ......Fabrice,
thanks for your earlier acknowledgement .......Keith Moore,

other benchmarks to know whether this is a fair rating or not.

sailing this type of boat, so in essence I am asking if there are
any crewing opportunities available on J92's this season. Out Of

Squeeze Bayou, hull #34, has just been purchased by Jason
Khoury and is being shipped from Nashville TN to her new home
here in San Diego, CA. This will bring the local fleet to 3 boats
and give some competition to Speedy Gonzales and Air Boss.

Hi fellow J/92 sailors. Anyone want to get some
discussiongoing around the following questions: For those of you
sailing handicap fleets with a 150% genoa ... What is the optimal
crossover to the 100% jib? 15 true? 18 true? More?Less? Any
opinions?

Just a quick note, I just got back from the Newport to
Ensenada race last weekend. The J-Boats turned in a SUPERB
performance. Speedy Gonzalez, J-92 won her class, J-105's did
really well (Snoopy finishing 98th overall), and the J-120's did
fantastic in the ULDB class. If anyone is interested in the race
results, send me a note and I will get the specific information.
Just another testimony of how great these boats are!

Hi fellow J/92 Owners! I have, in conjuction with my
brother, offered to take over management of the J/92 Class
Association website. The first order of business is to pass on,
on behalf of all J/92 Owners, our thanks to Topher Wurts and
Chuck Henderson, who were responsible for designing the site and
getting it up and running. They should be proud of a great
looking site!! Look for the site to be updated soon. I will
attempt to catch up on changes to the owners' list and will
review all the entries in the guest book to date. If you know of
any further changes or submissions please email them to me. In
addition, we will be posting information about the NA's scheduled
for the fall as soon as it becomes available. If you have any
stories, tips, items for the website please send them along.

On the resale front, I've been monitoring the '92s closely.
At present few boats seem to be turning over and prices have been
rather stable over the last eighteen months, probably owing to
the unique charecteristics of this boat. There's a definite
demographic for '92 owners and there seem to be few other
choices. As for the J/90 (or for that matter the J/125 I think it
is) these are very different boats and don't seem to fit the
profile as a replacement for their more comfortable and less
radical siblings. The slow production of the '92s in the US seems
to be a result of the crowded 30' market segment and the lack of
promotion of the boat by J/Boats, probably owing to the expansive
list of boats in the current line up. One thing we do know from
experience, if you pick the '92 you're likely to fall rather hard
for the boat and what a lot of fun it is!

In my research for a used (or new) J-80, 92, or 105 it has
come to my attention that the J-92 is practically out of
production, being replaced by the J-90. If it is true, I have
serious concerns over the potential resale of a future
investment. How about some discussion from the experienced J
sailors out there?
