Cockpit Instruments. Colin Mann (Poohsticks) sends us this suggestion for prominent cockpit display of GPS Receiver and remote VHF Speaker.

I got tired of sending people below to check the GPS during races in the fog or when using it to help picking out marks and downwind angles. I also was tired of having to take someone off the rail at the start line to listen for premature starters being identified over the VHF. I decided therefore to address both of those and last summer mad the little thing shown in the attached pictures. GPS Receiver Mount

I obtained a suitable piece of plastic and had it cut to fit the hatchway using the present hatch insert as a template. My waterproof portable GPS had a fixed mount that it came with and I put that in place. This allows the side benefit of running it off the boat 12v as well as connecting it to repeat steering info to the Sailcomp which is on my mast. I bought a VHF extension speaker (waterproof) and mounted that beside. All cables run inside a black plastic 'umbilical cord' to keep them neat yet flexible. When I don't want the unit visible in the cockpit I place it in the wooden mounts I placed on the shelf down below. It has worked really well for me and thought others might be interested.
