"When
is a J/92 not a stock J/92?"
'There are a few J/92's that have been customized
significantly from the class configuration and sail either with only
a conventional spinnaker or a conventional symmetric spinnaker in
addition to the A-sail'. John Guy, Jr.
has 'Hot Toddy' J92 #91 which fits into that
category.

Asked how his J 92 " Hot Toddy" is set up he
responded:-
I have rod rigging by Hall Rigging ( Phil Garland at Hall Spars knows
the length that the headstay should be and the size of the rod ). I made
this change for reduced stretch and reduced windage.
I run
symetrical spinnakers oversized by J + 10% with a carbon fiber J + 10%
spinnaker pole by Forespar ( from Layline ). " Hot Toddy" also
runs a 170% genoa to help in light air. The 170% gonoa cost three seconds
per mile on the rating. So far, the oversized symetrical appears to have
been an even trade for the big asymetrical spinnaker for rating purposes.Halyards
are stripped Technora from Layline with light shackles. I only run these
in big regattas because of the wear factor.
The boat does not have the V
berth, but it does have the head and hanging locker area. A Porta Potti is
used for convenience and light weight. Interior conveniences include
pressure water in the head sink, a deck washdown kit in the head for
a belowdecks shower, and a stereo. The only cooking is by outside bar-b-que
grill.
The diesel engine has been removed and replaced by a Honda 15 hp
for cruising and a Nissan 9.8 hp for racing. This resulted in a little
less drag, a little less weight, faster and more enjoyable motoring, and a
six second lowering of my rating.Fast cruising speed with the Honda is 6.5
to 6.7 knots and with the Nissan it is 6.3 to 6.5 knots.
Harken adjustable jib and genoa tracks, outside tracks for barberhauling,
windward sheeting traveller car ( still on the cockpit floor ), Lewmar six
part main sheet , and 48 to 1 backstay adjuster are the only other changes
to the boat.
As far as rig tuning, I just get the mast straight in the
boat and set the shrouds up medium tight. I like to race with 7 people,
and in the present configuration, " Hot Toddy" owes the
asymetrical spinnaker, 155 % genoa J 92 nine seconds per mile. |
