J92 Singlehanded Racing ....  Ragtime!

J/92 #18

There were a couple of posts in recent months about dodgers and apparently no one has seen one on a J92 - until now . . .  summer 2005

In order to move on to greater exploits in the Singlehanded Sailing Society we have to complete a long distance qualifier. This is at least 400 miles singlehanded under sail alone, getting at least 100 miles off the coast. The usual course is 200 miles out into the Pacific (often a close reach) and two hundred miles back (usually a broad reach). The sail out can be especially wet, so I decided it was time to install a dodger.

I considered a hatch dodger to minimize interference with the winches but really wanted better protection from spray. After pricing dodgers locally I contacted Thurston in Rhode Island, who made the original factory dodgers. Their price was very reasonable and they already had the patterns, so I ordered a standard J Boats dodger. It fits very well and Neil Thurston was very helpful in answering questions as I installed it.

I've included three photos, one of which is in "sailing mode" with the side curtains folded out of the way. The side curtains zip on and can be removed if desired. I had to modify the bracing attachments to clear the primaries. Also I will probably use my ATN sleeves to set and douse the spinnakers from the forward hatch. For inshore racing I will roll up or remove the dodger and set and douse from the companionway bag, as I have in the past.

I hope this information is helpful to the other owners.

Best Regards,
