Tuning Tips. The Webmaster here has a saying that he's fond of using: "Tune it, or Die!" We think he's referring to musical instruments in general, and cheap guitars in particular, but we're not always sure. He also likes to say: "You can tune a piano, but you can't tunafish." Anyway, here are some tips for tuning your J/92....

Tuning the Mast on "Zenda Express" for Block Island '92
by Jeff Johnstone

We set up the shrouds tight, with the uppers and lowers at 40 on the L00S guage (2000 lbs.) and the Intermediates at 26. The mast step was located in the middle, which allowed the mast about 2 inches of pre-bend. With the cascading backstay, we could induce or reduce headstay sag very easily. We rigged checkstays and running backstays on ZENDA for R&D reasons. We unrigged both of them after the heavy air race #2. While the added controls were nice for shaping the mainsail, they were not critical to headstay tension or rig support, and were an added handling nuisance. Just remember to have some fullness built into your main, so that the sail can take mast bend without inverting.
